New lamp in stock!

We are delighted to share a brand new product with you - this super stylish industrial style lamp. This fantastic tripod lamp is a great way to introduce a bit of the industrial look to your home, without compromising on style. It would fit well into a range of interior styles and also into homes with limited space thanks to the slimline design. I'm a big fan of the industrial style, but couldn't go for the full look in my Edwardian home, so this is a nice way to give a nod to it, without it feeling out of place in...

Trend spot at London Design Festival 2014

At my recent visit to the Tent design show at London Design Festival I spotted an interesting trend emerging…   Many of the exhibitors, showing cutting edge design from all over the world, had made detailed, elaborate surface texture a prominent part of their work.   Here is a quick round up of images showing texture being used to great visual effect on everything from stools to mirrors to wallpaper and also showing the wide range of materials used to create this, including paper, concrete, metal and fabric.   Jeonghwa Seo stool with luxuriously smooth bases topped with contrastingly rough textured concrete. Jake Phipps had some of...

Lighting at LDF2014 - No.1

London Design Festival was a wonderful source of inspiration in so many different arenas - from fabrics to wallpapers, cushions to ceramics. This week I've decided to pick out some of the lighting which caught my eye at the shows this year. This is by no means a comprehensive list, but a few which attracted my attention as I wandered around enjoying all the new design on offer. TENT LONDON Mater designed these lovely acorn-ish lights The Salute light from Seeddesign - based on a wine glass don't you know. A wonderful chandelier fitting from lighting wonders Curiousa & Curiousa. Vezzini and Chen brought their...

Cement Tiles - London Design Festival 2014

Cement tiles are something of an obsession for me, particularly the encaustic patterned tiles you see everywhere in Barcelona. Since moving here I’ve developed a habit of snapping every beautiful pattern I see - and there are many – and sharing them with a #tileaddict hashtag (and in this Patterned Tiles blogpost I wrote earlier this year). For those who are interested, encaustic tiles are ones where the pattern is made using clay of different pigments, rather than being painted on the top with a glaze. This means the pattern stays even as the tile wears down.   So, imagine my delight...

Charles Eames - Happy Birthday!

Today would’ve been Charles Eames birthday, if he had lived to be 108, so I thought it might be nice to honour him with a quick round up of shots of his beautiful, evergreen, design work. Charles and his wife Ray designed some of the most important and influential pieces of furniture in the 20th century, as well as games for kids, puzzles, films and even houses. They began working in their home with a DIY moulding machine which formed plywood into new shapes. Their first shape was a chair leg based on Eames own human leg and this got them their...

Creative gifts handmade in the UK

One of the reasons I started Pretty Dandy was a real love of handmade work from new designer-makers. Gorgeous Christmas Decorations

I love getting that festive feeling - hearing the first carol of the year, opening door number 1 on my (chocolate) advent calendar and baking mince pies. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside! However, all these things play second fiddle to my first love... decorating the Christmas tree. Ever since I was a little girl going crazy with tinsel and bits of silver string, I have loved decorating the tree. When I was a kid we had multicoloured lights and baubles made at school from cardboard tubes and crepe paper. In fact, I think my Mum still has...
